Breaking the Stigma: Why Mental Health Deserves Real Understanding
In this thought-provoking podcast episode, B.C. Dodge asks: When can we stop stigmatizing mental illness and offering oversimplified, dime-store psychological advice?
According to a 2017 post from the National Institute of Mental Health, one in six U.S. adults lives with some form of mental illness. Think about that: If you and five friends went out to dinner, statistically, one of you might be managing a mental health condition.
So why do we continue to trivialize these struggles? Why do we dismiss people’s feelings?
If someone had a physical disability, you wouldn’t tell them to “just get over it” or “pray harder” to fix it. So why do we treat people with depression, anxiety, or other mental health challenges this way?
B.C. emphasizes that while prayer can be a powerful source of comfort, it isn’t a substitute for professional mental health care. Mental health issues are real and valid—even if they aren’t visible.
It’s time to stop the stigma and start listening with empathy and understanding. Ignoring the reality of mental health does more harm than good. Let’s be better.
